The Western Europe Applied Art of the 11th – 15th Centuries

The collection of Western European monuments of applied art from the Middle Ages is exhibited in the Romanov Gallery in the Small Hermitage. It showcases the items of church-plate including the reliquary caskets, monstrances, croziers, processional crosses, carved bone plates with the scenes form secular and religious subjects, the ivory carving of the Madonna and Child. A prominent place in the collection of the Limoges masters is occupied by a casket bearing scenes from the life of St. Valeria. A very rare example is the 14th-century ceramic Fortuny Vase executed in the Hispano-Moorish style. The exhibition also contains pieces of furniture, tapestries, stained-glass windows and metal artwork.
