Sword

Italy, Middle - second half of the 16th century

Outwardly this sword - in particular the configuration of the hilt and scabbard, and of course the decoration of gilded silver, mother-of-pearl and coloured stones - would seem to have been intended for official or ceremonial use. The nature of the decoration on the blade and the technique of gold inlay on a blued ground, indicate that it may have been made in a Venetian workshop. According to tradition, this sword was presented by the Venetian Republic to Sigismund I, King of Poland (1506-48).
